Dial a date on your mobile with Meet Me

Technology has been helping geeks get romantic since the days of A/S/L on IRC, but here's a world first: a dating service that introduces eligible singles via video calls.

Meet Me is an Australian introduction service that relies on the 3G mobile network to hook people up. After registering on the Meet Me website and creating a profile, users are matched to people with similar interests and a list of potential paramours is delivered to their mobile phone. If two people say yes to one another, a two-minute video call takes place between them.

At the end of the initial call, each person is offered the option of further contact. If both choose "yes", the couple can continue to contact each other via the Meet Me interface for unlimited phone chats. If either or both press "no", the mysterious strangers disappear from each other's lives forever.

Melanie Bowman, Marketing Manager of Meet Me, believes the service is superior to profile-based dating websites because it offers a more genuine experience.

"You can see or hear somebody on your first meeting," she said. "Two minutes gives you enough time to determine whether or not you actually like someone enough to take it further."

Meet Me is currently free to use, but a paid credit system will be introduced following the initial trial period.
