Daylight Savings Time and HFS Plus glitch: manually changing time has its own problem

CNET staff
Last time, I suggested manually changing the time by an hour as an alternative to selecting Daylight Savings Time box in the Date & Time control panel (and thereby avoiding the problems associated with the DST option). Whew! An avalanche of readers (or so it seemed to me!)were quick to inform me that this "solution" has its own problem: Any software that figures your time as an offset of GMT time will calculate your time incorrectly (off by an hour). For example, most email programs work this way. As a result, the email program will incorrectly timestamp the email you send. (Thanks, Julian Koh, Matt White, Glenn Austin, David Ian Salter, Jeff Hansen and many others).
