David Hasselhoff rides a T. rex in 'Kung Fury' music video
Thank you, Kickstarter. Our dreams of seeing David Hasselhoff do the splits, lean on a Lambo and ride a dinosaur have all come true.
Sometimes Kickstarter projects deliver practical goods like slim wallets and smartwatches. Sometimes they deliver magical forays into worlds full of explosions, wolves with glowing eyes and David Hasselhoff majestically crossing the landscape with a carnivorous dinosaur as his steed. This wonderland comes courtesy of "Kung Fury," a film that raised $630,000 on Kickstarter to create a mashup of '80s cop movies, kung-fu epics and action comedies. Plus, there's time travel.
Laser Unicorns, the group behind the film, recruited pop singer and ex-"Knight Rider" star David Hasselhoff to record the "Kung Fury" theme song "True Survivor." A music video released to promote the single and the movie is a fiesta of synthesizers, gunfire, vintage computers and Hasselhoff's smoldering stare.
Hasselhoff, sporting a curly mullet and fingerless gloves, fights off bad guys, climbs out of a white Lamborghini Countach and strolls past people who look like Mad Max extras.
The lyrics are pure generic 1980s pop, crying out about how, "Girl, we need some action." It's catchy enough that it could have broken into at least the Top 50 on the charts if it had actually been released in the '80s.
The video gives us a good look at the weirdness that is "Kung Fury," from martial arts sequences to images of Adolf Hitler, the target of the hero's quest through time. And yes, there's a keytar cameo. "Kung Fury" will be released on YouTube on May 28.
