Cursor jumping in PowerBooks

Cursor jumping in PowerBooks

CNET staff
We continue to get reports of cursor jumping with PowerBooks and iBooks. The typical symptom is that, while entering text, the cursor location sporadically jumps to some new location a few lines earlier in the text. In just the last day, Dave Brasgalla reported this with his iBook running Mac OS 9 - as did Samantha Perkins with her PowerBook G3 Series. I have also seen this on my PowerBook 3400. All agree that adjusting the Trackpad sensitivity has no effect. Nor does trying to be careful not to inadvertently touch the Trackpad.

None-the-less, a previous report on this matter ("iBook keyboard and cursor issues" in the iBook MacFixIt Report) asserts that the cause is inadvertent touching of the Trackpad by your thumb.

Update: As noted in the iBook Report (and as several readers have now noted as well), disabling the option to "Use Trackpad for Clicking" will likely work-around this problem.

Alternatively, Greg Golden suggests giving the utility TapGuard 1.0.1 a try. It is specifically designed to fix this problem! [We mentioned it back in November.]
