Covad offers Mac access Calif.-based broadband service provider Covad Communications announced plans this week to expand service offerings to Mac users, a move that is expected to lead to a noticeable uptick in its subscriber base. Covad's first-ever offering to the Mac community includes "high-speed Internet service for the Apple Macintosh platform and a simple self-install, plug-and-play broadband service with Mac-compatible software that supports operating systems 8.0, 9.0, and Mac OS X." Keynote a PowerPoint killer? A SunSpot article takes a look at the already hotly debated functionality comparison between Microsoft's PowerPoint and Apple's Keynote. "Though a compelling piece of software, particularly for a first version, the weeks since Keynote's introduction have revealed enough shortcomings to raise doubts about whether it's quite ready to completely displace the venerable PowerPoint." NVIDIA, ATI rev graphics cards CNET reports on ATI's series of new chips, including a high-end graphics processor that beats the current speed champ, ATI's Radeon 9700. Nvidia, meanwhile, is expected to announce mainstream and budget versions of its oft-delayed GeForce FX chip, which was heralded last year but has yet to arrive in stores. The upshot is that ATI will have skipped a full generation ahead of Nvidia, said analyst Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research , an awkward but hardly crippling situation for Nvidia, given the company's sizable market share lead. Matsushita offers 5 GHz wireless networking chip Matsushita Electric Industrial announced Wednesday that it has developed a chipset for home audio-video equipment that will enable wireless transfer of video over the 5GHz band. Samples of the chip will be available later this month for about $85. The chipset is compliant with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' 802.11a and 802.11e standards. More.
