Compaq brews server deal

Compaq Computer has made a multimillion-dollar server sale to consumer products company Unilever, which sells products under brand names such as Ragu, Lipton and Vaseline. Under the deal, Unilever will use three high-end Compaq GS series Alpha servers, several mid-range-end ES models and a sophisticated storage system. The system will run SAP's business software, the 10,000th Compaq customer to install the complicated package. About 55,000 Unilever employees will use the system. Compaq has been chasing top-ranked Sun Microsystems as well as IBM and Hewlett-Packard in the high-end Unix server market.
