Code Red and Access Attacks: A new MacFixIt Report; Cisco posts 2.4.2 firmware update; HP printers vulnerable?

We have received much new information about the Code Red worm and especially the problems it is causing via its attempts to access other computers and thereby infect these systems. As it turns out, the infection attempts (primarily via web sharing) may actually be causing more problems than the infection itself. The rapid spread of the worm is causing interruption of service with many DSL and cable modem systems - thereby affecting Mac users even though the worm does not target Macs. In fact, our own AT&T@home system was disabled for several hours last night, due to this worm. When we called their tech support number, we received a recorded announcement to this effect. We were then disconnected. There was no option to speak to anyone - so you know they must have been swamped with calls.

We have gathered all of this recent information into a new MacFixIt Report titled: "Code Red and Access Attacks." It includes the relevant postings from the past few days plus several new postings (most of the new information focuses on problems with Cisco routers):

  • Cisco (temporarily) posts CBOS 2.4.2 firmware update
  • Qwest offers 2.4.1 firmware update
  • Reprogram Cisco router via management port: reader tips
  • HP JetDirect cards may be attacked by Code Red
