Canon's new OS X Driver in Retail Boxes?

David Urban reports that newly shipping, boxed Canon scanners at retail outlets may include the new Mac OS X driver, which Canon officials promised would be delivered on the Web next week:

"I got one of the first Canoscan 5000F scanners from Fry's and it came with Scangear 8.0X. This must be the new software that they are talking about. It has a creation date of 9/6/02. it seems from this date that they have been sitting on it for awhile."

The current, publically available version of Canon ScanGear is 7.0.1.
