Cannot download MIE Embed Security fix from Netscape?: a solution

CNET staff
Bill Felice reports that he could not get Microsoft's Embed security fix to download from a Netscape browser. When he clicked on the link to any of the listed servers, the connection would be refused. When he tried the same thing with Microsoft Internet Explorer, the download succeeded.

I tried this myself and can confirm it. When I used Netscape, I got a "404 error" (Object does not exist) for every server link I tried. When I used Explorer, the download worked. Interestingly, the Microsoft web site detects what web browser you are using (if you are using Explorer, a statement on the page says that you appear to be using Explorer). Still, I doubt that the problem with downloading from Netscape is deliberate.

Update: a solution: To download the file from Netscape, you have to fix the URL. The problem is due to blank spaces in the URL. Specifically, the last section of the URL reads: <IE 4.0a Updater.hqx>. Change this to: <IE 4.0a Updater.hqx>. The download will now work. Apparently, Explorer can correctly deal with this on its own. (Thanks, Adam Feldman.)
