Buzz Out Loud 1511: Don't take tech to the bedroom (Podcast)

Brian Tong has a rule about no technology in the bedroom. Molly's not so sure. It's Computer Love Friday, everyone! Also, Google continues to make piles of cash and says it's making tons of money (again), and Microsoft may or may not be working on a social/search hybrid site. RIM may or may not be working on an Apple TV competitor, which we fervently pray is not true. Please, RIM. Please don't do it.

Molly Wood Former Executive Editor
Molly Wood was an executive editor at CNET, author of the Molly Rants blog, and host of the tech show, Always On. When she's not enraging fanboys of all stripes, she can be found offering tech opinions on CBS and elsewhere, and offering opinions on everything else to anyone who will listen.

EMAILS

“Buzz Crew, I was listening to episode 1510 and want to comment on an email from one of the listeners about comcast cutting him off. Anyway he said he switched to AT&T Uverse but AT&T has a cap also so he went back to comcast. Well let me tell you I work for AT&T and also have Uverse, though we have a cap I have not heard of anyone being disconnected for going over the cap, I just think they have it so they can use it to deal with the serious abusers.

Love the Show and Love Molly Wood,

AT&T employee…

“Hey Buzz Crew,
In the wake of the Netflix price-hike Blockbuster is offering a 30 day trial and discounted plan that is seriously making me reconsider them. I subscribe to Netflix for movies and Gamefly for games. The new Netflix pricing means I will have to pay $17.98 for streaming, 1 disc, and Blu-ray. Gamefly is $15.95 for 1 game, which brings the grand total to $33.93 before taxes.
Blockbuster is offering 2 discs at a time, movies or games, and Blu-ray for $14.99. When combined with the $7.99 streaming only Netflix plan that’s a total of $22.98 before taxes. I guess Blockbuster gets a second chance with me. Biggest loser in all of this? Sorry Gamefly. Love the shooooow!

Hey buzz crew:

After reading the various reviews on spotify and watching donald’s own first hands on review, I went ahead and cancel my subscription from Netflix and got an ultimate subscription with spotify. Realistically I spent more time in my car commuting to work and traveling than at home watching tv. If I want to watch a show I access the on demand library from my cable provider ( Comcast). I LOVE spotify, and even though I still haven’t play with it long enough ( I am writing this email after one hour of purchasing my subscription) I can see how I can get more out of this service than what I was getting from netflix. So goodbye Netflix, and welcome spotify. At least for me.

Keep up the awesome job.

“Hey Buzz Team,

I’m not sure why everyone is freaking out about Spotify when a similar subscription service has been available in the US since September of last year. Rdio has been offering ad-free music subscription with the same kind of syncing to mobile devices and offline mode that made Spotify so intriguing for a while in the US. Their interface seems a lot more intuitive and the social aspect of it is a lot more robust.

I can understand that if people don’t want to pay money then Spotify is a great new service. However, if you are going to go the subscription route, I would urge buzztowners to take a look at Rdio before they make the decision. Been listening since episodes in the teens, keep up the great work!

Computer Love

“Molly and Brian,
My wife and I celebrate our second wedding anniversary this September.
We plan to take a week long vacation and visit a few national parks along the way on our road trip. The problem? My wife has her iPod Touch with her at all times. As often as she listens to it, I wonder if it hasn’t been surgically attached to her body. How can I convince my wife to leave the iPod at home (or atleast in the hotel room) and just enjoy the sites and sounds of the wonderful national park system with me?

“The first song I would search Spotify for is…

Pixies – wave of mutilation

And if you find any left over Google + invites laying around on the floor feel free to toss one of those also.

I seem to be hanging out in invite purgatory lately.

“Hey Buzz Crew!
The first song I will search for on Spotify is Drive-The Deftones
It is Cars cover and really rare. It is not even on Amazon to download. So, I’m curious to see if Spotify has it. It is such a good version of that song and I’m not one for covers.
Thanks!
Hoping for an invite :)
