Buzz Out Loud 1493: We're all screwed. Drink. (Podcast)

It's both a fun game and a sad commentary on the state of our existence! On today's show, the average user is caught in the crossfire of the hacker wars, but dammit, even LulzSec agrees that Sega is off limits. Speaking of which, Donald might have been right about Bitcorn, rather than Bitcoin. Ouch. And how to restore the memories of really, really stoned rats. Poor little rats. --Molly

EMAILS

Dear BOL

I signed up for an account on Mt. Gox, and lucky have’t used the account yet. Lucky me! See the email I received below.

Because this is not a government currency does that mean we have little or no way to protect ourselves or go to the authorities if we get jacked for our coins?

Thanks,

Steve St.Onge

Dear Mt.Gox user,

Our database has been compromised, including your email. We are working on a
quick resolution and to begin with, your password has been disabled as a
security measure (and you will need to reset it to login again on Mt.Gox).

If you were using the same password on Mt.Gox and other places (email, etc),
you should change this password as soon as possible.

For more details, please see this:

https://support.mtgox.com/entries/20208066-huge-bitcoin-sell-off-due-to-a-compromised-account-rollback

The informations there will be updated as our investigation progresses.

Please accept our apologies for the troubles caused, and be certain we will do
everything we can to keep the funds entrusted with us as secure as possible.

The leaked data includes the following:

- Account number
- Account login
- Email address
- Encrypted password

While the password is encrypted, it is possible to bruteforce most passwords
with time, and it is likely bad people are working on this right now.

Any unauthorized access done to any account you own (email, mtgox, etc) should
be reported to the appropriate authorities in your country.

Thanks,
The Mt.Gox team

When talking about the patent to shut off apples camera using an IR signal you may have missed one of the more entertaining things to follow.

Since they would be broadcasting the IR signal at concerts there’s no way to keep this secret. So how long before someone start selling a portable version. Now people can walk down the street shutting off Iphone cameras as they go. I also see the MPAA pushing other companies to include the same tech. Now people can keep all cameras from working around Then, so if they are doing something stupid or illegal there’s less chance that anyone will have it on tape.

Love the show
Ken

Hi BOLers!
I remember one of you talking about how apple will not make CDs for Lion. You were wondering what would happen if your install became corrupted, because before you could insert a DVD and fix it. I am running the developer version and I can tell you how you can fix it. When you install lion, it partitions your hard drive. One is called recovery. Here, you can reinstall the OS (keeping all of your files intact). So you really can use it without a cd. It is a nice little feature.
Thanks!
–Sam from Cupertino.
