Buzz Out Loud 1423: No joy in Zynga-ville (podcast)

Zynga tries to trademark the use of -ville as a suffix in everything from games (including the games it shamelessly ripped off) to clothing stores. Won't someone stop the madness? Please? Also, Goldman Sachs states from its highly compromised position that Facebook could be a credible threat to Netflix, and credulous reporters and shareholders eat it up. Plus, HP makes a SERIOUS move: putting WebOS on all new PCs. --Molly

Hey Buzz Crew:
I wanted to clarify an issue you’ve brought up on several recent shows — most recently episode 1421 — about the so-called “”jail breaking exception”" to the DMCA. You correctly point out that the Copyright Office has ruled that jailbreaking your mobile phone is not considered an illegal. What your listeners may not realize however, is that the exception is much more narrow than is commonly known. Specifically, one still cannot run illegally obtained apps on your jailbroken phone without running afoul of copyright law. So while the technical act of jailbreaking your phone might be legal, going to cydia and getting yourself a nice free pirate version of some app that usually costs money certainly is not legal.
Love the show.
Darren the IP lawyer.

Hi gang,

If the FAA approves the iPad as a navigation aid, does that mean we can finally stop turning our devices off at take off & landing?

(I’ll trust Molly to provide the obligatory “”Planes in Europe & Asia don’t crash, why are we such cowards?”" rant)

Hey BOL great show, I wanted to add a to the Feedback Loop that this merger would give Sprint the only GSM and CDMA network in the US!!!

From my perspective this is HUGE and they could carry any phones that either of the competitors carry.

Let’s make it a 3-way race. Boooyah!!

Dear BUZZ crew!

It turns out that the Vancouver UFO that Molly observed was a kite with lights attached.
I need to try that.
