Buzz Out Loud 1364: It's not funny, it's art (podcast)

We're stealing lines from "Love, Actually" today, because Natali can quote it by heart when it's super a propos to a guy very disturbingly embedding a camera in the back of his own head. Ew. But hey, it's art! Also, Twitter says it's not suppressing Wikileaks as a trending topic--although it's a trending topic in our show. And AT&T is the worst carrier in America, says Consumer Reports. Hey, at least we didn't say it this time. --Molly

Hi there!
Since Friday, we Brazilians can finally buy an iPad here… or not. Right after it became available here in São Paulo, Brazil, a large electronics chain that was selling the device was served with a legal action from Transform, a company that sells a defibrilator that’s named iPad and registered the name back in 2007. Transform picked Fast Shop (the chain) because of its size but apparently they intend to go after anyone who tries to sell iPads.

Link to the news article (in Brazilian Portuguese, sorry): http://g1.globo.com/tecnologia/noticia/2010/12/no-dia-do-lancamento-seis-ipad-sao-apreendidos-em-loja-de-sao-paulo.html

Love the show!

With all of this vitriol going on over Vampire Weekend’s selling out to advertising, it’s quite comical that the hipsters aren’t even noticing what Apple is doing to The Beatles. The new iTunes ads, featuring still shots and original Beatles music show the Apple logo just as long as they do iTunes. It begs the question: is Apple trying to sell Beatles music (an agreement that was met with a big meh), or is Apple _using_ the Beatles to sell Apple’s family of products. Too, the line between Apple records and Apple computer/iTunes gets even further blurred when a youngster looks at an old Beatles lp or cd and sees “”Apple Records”". Was that by design or a complete coincidence?

Would the band have ever gone for this kind of manipulation of their art? Doubtful. It’s just even more interesting that the hipsters tying Vampire Weekend to the stake haven’t even noticed all of this.
