Steve Johnson was having a problem on his 68040-based Quadra 610: "On startup, the Mac reports 'An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet. Make sure your network connections are correct.' A quick check of the AppleTalk control panel shows that AppleTalk is now set to Printer Port. Each time one attempts to set it to Ethernet, the same error occurs. That the Ethernet card/connection was working was confirmed in the TCP/IP realm, and successful TCP/IP transactions were done." He was eventually able to solve the problem by a procedure that involved selecting Ethernet when no AppleTalk device was connected to the Mac.

In any case, he found that disabling Timbuktu Pro 4 completely eliminated the problem. Netopia has now confirmed this, replying: "We have actually found that this occurs only on certain machines. We will be coming out with a 4.02 patcher for Timbuktu Pro hopefully by the beginning of December. This should have a fix for this issue."
