Boot Camp 1.1 (#3): Problems installing drivers, fix; New AppleTime synch utility

Problems installing drivers, fix Yesterday we noted some issues with installing the new drivers included with Boot Camp Beta 1.1 on some Intel-based Macs.

It now appears that the root problem in some of these cases has to do with the MSI (Microsoft Installer) script used to place the drivers in their appropriate locations. This script (which has a .msi file extension) appears to fail when attempting to run on some systems.

The workaround is to extract the files from the MSI script, then manually use hardware manager to update all device drivers by pointing to the extracted files.

This can be accomplished with a utility like Less MSIérables, which is specifically designed to extract the contents of an .msi File

MacFixIt reader Alan Ramos, who used this workaround successfully, writes:

"The updates complete without problems and now I have the updates installed-  the only problematic install remains the iSight.

"I don't see any other way to get this MSI working on the troubled systems out there unless Apple modifies the MSI- the common error messages are either, unable to remove the old drivers- or that it can't find the MSI installer (even though it just dropped them in your C:/Documents and Settings/username/temp/isxxxx folder.)"

New AppleTime synch utility Meanwhile, MacFixIt reader Adam Williams notes a process called "AppleTime" that immediately runs at Windows XP boot-time and synchronizes with Apple's time servers.

"I noticed after i reinstalled my firewall software that immediately at boot-up a process called AppleTime requests access to apples time server. This is no doubt Apple's fix to the clock issue between Mac OS X which uses Universal Time and Windows which does not. Unless of course you did the TimeIsUniversal=1 registry setting which makes Windows treat time exactly how Mac OS X does with(certain side effects). If you did do this hack it's probablly recommended you undo it if you have an internet connection available to you, let this system process Apple installs worry about the clock."
