Word and Mac OS 8 conflict A reader reports that after updating toe Mac OS 8 on his PowerCenter 150 , MS Word 6 crashes with a Type 10 error on launch. He claims that several other users - posting on Mac newsgroups - have reported a similar results. I am sure this does not affect every one, or I would have heard more reports of this by now. Still, it seemed worth mentioning.

Another Word/3400 glitch work-around A couple of readers noted yet another potential work-around for the Word extra rulers etc. problem on a PowerBook 3400 and Mac OS 8: switch resolutions to Black & White.

Sounds Lib in Mac OS 8 causes alert sound problem? Peter Visima was unable to hear any alert sounds after updating to Mac OS 8. When he called Apple about this, they asked him to check if he had a Sounds Lib file in his Extensions folder. He did. Deleting it cured the problem. Personally, I have not seen such a file in any of my recent System Folders.

Respond and Photoshop conflict Wolf Technologies, Inc. has acknowledged a conflict between their Respond software and Adobe's Photoshop. They are working on a fix.

Keep Trying A new utility called Keep Trying includes several features for making using your phone more convenient. But the one that most appealed to me was: "a listen-in option that, when you're asked to "please stay on the line...", allows you to hang up the phone's receiver and listen in on the line through your modem's speaker." If you do not have a speaker phone, this can be a boon for those long waits on tech support lines.

More Trojan Horse files I continue to get reports ofvarious Trojan Horse files being circulated - especially on Hotline servers. These include a file ironically called the "Ultimate Hacker's Guide" (thanks, Xavier Bury) and phony versions of StuffIt Deluxe 4.5 and Speed Doubler (as also noted on Mac RumorMill).
