AppleShare IP 5.0.2 Update is now available. You can download the Updater to upgrade your current AppleShare IP 5.0 software. Or you can order the ASIP 5.0.2 Update CD, which includes additional software. (Thanks, Louis Brazil.)

Two OpenFolderListDF files on one disk Regarding a previous report, a reader writes that they were having some freeze problems that they determined was due to the presence of two copies of the invisible Mac OS 8 OpenFolderListDF file on their drive. Deleting the older one and rebuilding the desktop solved the problem.

Update: As reported by several readers (and as I confirmed myself), there may normally be two copies of this file on your disk: one at the root level of your startup drive and another in the Preferences folder. I am still not sure what this all means and will try to investigate further.

Spam Blaster and firewalls It appears that Spam Blaster 1.0 does not work from behind a firewall. Proxy support is being added in the forthcoming version 1.5 and should remedy this problem (see also related item).

Highware updates Highware has a web page that describes the Mac OS 8 compatibility of its products. Its security products are currently not compatible. A new version of FileGuard is expected by the end of October. New versions of DiskGuard and FileCrypt will hopefully be out by the end of the year. (Thanks, MacInTouch.)

FreePPP 2.6.2 is out; fixes screen saver glitch FreePPP 2.6.2 Beta 1 is now available. Among other fixes, it resolves the problem (previously described here at MacFixIt) where screen savers (such as After Dark and Sleeper) are disabled after FreePPP closes a connection.

Myrmidon 2.0.1 has been released. This version contains a few bug fixes and compatibility changes: fixes a bug that would cause a crash on Power Macs when QuickTime was not installed; fixes a compatibility problem with Adobe Illustrator; fixes a bug that would insert too much vertical space after a link.

FontBox 2.2 is now in the Download Library.
