VirtualPC 2.0 announced According to a story in BusinessWire (thanks, MacSurfer), Connectix announced Virtual PC 2.0. According to Connectix, 2.0 "is 25-40 percent faster than version 1.0 taking full advantage of Apple's OS 8 and the new Power Macintosh G3 line."

Modem access abroad: another helpful web site Following up on previous items on this subject, a reader pointed me to a web site with a database, searchable by country, of hotels that provide good modem access from your room. It's called Room with a Clue. However, the list primarily includes only expensive hotels or well-known chains that you would have likely guessed had this access anyway.

Virtual printer feature gone from Adobe PSPrinter 8.5.1 William Z. Harris notes: "Previously, Adobe's driver (PSPrinter 8.3.1) had a definite improvement over Apple's driver: Virtual Printer settings. This allowed one to set up a relationship to a non-connected printer, using the PPD for all necessary parameters. By keeping a desktop printer set for a service bureau's imagesetter, this greatly simplified the process of preparing a PostScript print-to-disk file for a service bureau. Virtual Printer is now gone."

Apple Tech Support experience I had my first opportunity last week to check out Apple's telephone tech support - since Apple started charging for it. I needed a trackpad repair for my PowerBook 3400. I found the experience mildly irritating. I had to go through numerous steps of a phone tree, speak to at least three different people, and answer a host of questions (including giving my credit card number even though this was to be a warranty repair) before anyone even asked the specifics of why I was calling. However, once they agreed to repair the 3400, the service was great. The next day, they sent me an empty box to ship my PowerBook back to them (all at their expense). The PowerBook returned, working great, just 48 hours after I shipped it!
