Blackmagic brings the cinema to its new camera

Blackmagic, a company best known for its digital recording and transcoding boxes, has announced a brand new Cinema Camera.

It's been a big week for film-makers and videographers, kicking off with new cameras added to Canon's Cinema EOS line and a new upgrade for RED Dragon sensors that bumps resolution to 6K. They have all been announced to coincide with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera has a 2.5K image sensor with a built-in SSD recorder, support for Canon EF and ZF mount lenses and a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen at the back. The photo above doesn't give you the best idea of just how compact this camera is, so measure out a space of 16x11x12cm, and weigh it down with 1.7kg. That's how small this is, without a lens attached. It's also designed from a solid block of aluminium.

Connectivity is flexible as well, with a 1/4-inch jack audio input and a Thunderbolt port. It shoots 12-bit RAW uncompressed, and comes with DaVinci Resolve for grading and colour correction. Check out some of the Aussie-flavoured test footage here.
