BlackBerry Bold 9790 emerges, looks just like 9780
It's Spot the Difference time, as photos emerge of a BB7-running, touchscreen, specced-up BlackBerry Bold 9780, dubbed the 9790.
Photos have emerged of the upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9790, and it looks virtually identical to the older Bold 9780. Boy Genius has the snaps.
The Bold 9790 (up there, on the left) is basically a cross between the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 (on the right) and the Bold 9780. From the 9900, it takes a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of storage space, and a 5-megapixel camera, as well as BlackBerry 7 OS. From the 9780, it takes a 2.4-inch screen. Unlike the 9780's screen, however, the 9790's display is touch-sensitive. The screen's resolution isn't yet known.
At first glance, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the 9790 from the older 9780. Fans of Spot the Difference will enjoy searching for the subtle changes RIM has made. On the front, the four control buttons are now part of the same panel as the screen, as they are on the new Curve 9360, while the notifications light is now circular.
The back of the phone has also been redesigned, and is no longer textured, as the battery cover of the 9780 was. It's now formed of one smooth piece of what seems to be plastic, which makes the phone look cheaper. Also, the top of the phone, where the camera and flash are found, appears to be slightly raised up. This may make the 9790 easier to hold than the 9780.
The 9790 will probably be a mid-range device, positioned between the touchscreen-free Curve 9360 and the flagship Bold 9900. We hope that RIM will price it accordingly, as one of the major turn-offs of the Bold 9900 is its high asking price of around £500 SIM-free, or around £35 per month if you pick it up for free on a contract.
As the 9790 hasn't been officially announced yet, we don't know for certain if it will be available in the UK. It probably will be, though.
