Black Friday 2012 laptops, desktops, and tablets

Shopping for a new PC or tablet? We've got a list of the best Black Friday deals, and a few to avoid at any price.

As Black Friday expands into a week-long marathon of deals (followed by the now-requisite Cyber Monday), a new laptop, desktop, or tablet may be high up on your shopping list. And with Windows 8 launching dozens of new computer models , that's just one more reason to upgrade. Perusing the major retailers for PC deals, I found a few noteworthy ones, as well as a few you should be warned away from.

There are decent discounts on some mainstream full-power laptops, as well as on newer touch-screen Windows 8 systems. Tablet deals were less common, largely restricted to no-name brands. A few stores listed Apple's iPad, but at full price, with the promise of a store gift card thrown in to make it feel like a Black Friday sale.

The picks shown here include some of my favorite Black Friday computer deals, and a few you should definitely avoid. There must be a giant warehouse somewhere filled with Celeron and Pentium laptops and desktops that exist solely to get trotted out each year for sub-$200 doorbuster specials. I would generally stay away from those, but if you find a better Black Friday laptop, desktop, or tablet deal worth sharing, post it in the comments section below.

Update 11/22/2012: Apple, HP and Origin PC have a couple of last-minute Black Friday deals worth noting. See the gallery above for my original list.

  • Apple has a very rare $101 discount on nearly every MacBook laptop, as seen here.
  • HP has several discounted laptops and desktops, the one that caught my eye was a reasonably priced Pavilion g6 15-inch laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor for $399.
  • Boutique gaming PC maker Origin will upgrade an 11-inch Eon 11 with a 120GB SSD and a 17-inch Eon 17 with a 240GB SSD, plus CPU and GPu overclicking (where available). Details here.
