Final Fantasy XV coming to PS4 and Xbox One September 30

Square Enix on Wednesday made a series of announcements regarding Final Fantasy XV, with a mobile game, movie and anime tie-ins coming ahead of the game's long-awaited release in September.

A decade after it was first revealed, Final Fantasy XV has been given a release date: September 30, 2016.

The game, as it was then titled, Final Fantasy Versus XIII was first announced at E3 2006 for the yet-to-be released PlayStation 3. In 2013, it was rebranded as Final Fantasy XV and moved to the current generation of consoles, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The release date was one of many announcements made at the Final Fantasy: Uncovered event in Los Angeles this Wednesday. Developer Square Enix is placing big bets on Final Fantasy XV, bringing news of several tie-in releases ahead of the game's release.

Here's a quick rundown of everything:

  • A free demo, Final Fantasy XV Platinum Demo, is available now for both PS4 and Xbox One. Completing it will grant players a special summon for use in the final game.
  • Justice Monsters Five, a mobile game for iOS and Android, will tie in to Final Fantasy XV. Pre-registration for the game begins today.
  • Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad"), Lena Headey ("Game of Thrones") and Sean Bean ("The Lord of the Rings") will provide voices for Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, a feature length CG film that takes place concurrently with the story of the game.
  • A prequel anime series titled Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV will be released on YouTube in five parts ahead of the game's release. The first episode is already up.

Additionally, two special edition packages were announced, both of which are available for pre-order on Square Enix's online store.

The Deluxe Edition comes with bonus game content, a blu-ray Kingsglaive disc and fancy steelbook packaging. Then there's the Ultimate Collectors Edition, which packs all of the above plus a special soundtrack, a figure of the game's main character, an art book and even more in-game bonuses. Only 30,000 units of the Ultimate Collectors Edition will be made.

Japanese role-playing games don't come with any higher pedigree than Final Fantasy, but the series has been faltering in recent years.

The last non-spinoff single player game released on consoles was Final Fantasy XIII back in 2009. Though it was a commercial success, it didn't receive the same overwhelmingly positive critical response as previous titles in the series.

Things are looking up though, with Final Fantasy XV's release date now known and the long awaited Final Fantasy VII remake being announced last year.
