Best of the forums this week: Steve Jobs to retire?

The CNET UK forums are busier than ever, and we've selected our favourite posts from the last week. Is Steve Jobs about to retire? Do UMPCs really suck?

If you agree that Google and Apple are equally worthy of avoidance, that UMPCs are pointless, and that Steve Jobs is about to retire, you're missing out on some action in our forums. And if you don't agree, you're missing your chance for a heated argument.

Steve Jobs to retire
This week, Green speculates that Steve Jobs is to announce his retirement at the 9 September Apple event, now that Bill Gates has left the Microsoft building: "Bill has just gone so maybe he wanted to beat his friend/rival by a few months. That, and he has had problems with his health, at least this event will prove to everyone that he's not dead."

Motorola sucks
Also, because we love to complain about tech like Perez Hilton likes to remotely abuse idiots he's never met, we spent some time this week chucking tech we hate into Room 101. Forum regular redmozzy announced his loathing for Motorola, claiming that: "Motorola phones -- they can go into Room 101. Worst software on the market, IMHO."

UMPCs are utterly pointless
Newbie member AnotherGold took the opportunity to ejaculate his intolerance of UMPCs, too, by saying: "For the same sort of price [as a UMPC], you could get a significantly more powerful 13-inch widescreen laptop which is only fractionally bigger. If you really need to carry a laptop around with you, what difference does a couple of inches make?"

Forum vet weetanhops agrees: "I'd toss UMPCs in [Room 101] full stop. They're just so pointless -- why would I want to lug around a massive slab of glossy fingerprinted plastic just so that it can run for 2 hours or less and then die on me?"

Google should be avoided
Even Google didn't escape the hate. David Gilson expressed his palpable fear of the Google ecosystem, claiming: "While I would bet my life that Google is a far more philanthropic organisation than Apple is, I kind of view their ecosystem with a similar eye. Whatever OS you're using, you don't have to use the Google ecosystem, although if you do, you're totally dependant on them. This is why I actually avoid using Google services... so I'm definitely not going to jump at using a Google browser."

Your two cents
If you enjoy spreading hate with a heated debate, or sharing the joy for your shiny new toy, you really need to get yourself in the Crave Podcast Lounge in our forums. It has the odd shaved chimp knocking about, but we're terribly fond of our tech-obsessed regulars, and they'll love you like a vegan loves a good dose of malnourishment.
