Yes, every manufacturer is trying to jump on the green bandwagon, but as power consumption by tech products is an area that is long overdue closer scrutiny, we're happy to make note of as many as we can to raise awareness of the issue.

In the "every little bit helps" category, even a humble hard disk drive can be more energy efficient. The Welland Greenstar 3.5-inch Hard Disk Drive Enclosure claims green cred through a built-in power management technology that shuts the drive down automatically when data transfer is complete so that it doesn't spin idly.

Welland claims that in Idle mode, while the hard drive is waiting for read/write commands from the system, its power consumption is at 80 percent; in Suspend mode, the hard drive is still alive but power consumption is only at 20 percent; and in Power Down mode, while the hard drive is shut down and the only component consuming power is the control board, power consumption drops to a mere seven percent of when it is fully active in Read/Write mode.

These three modes of power management should not only decrease its power consumption, but should also theoretically prolong the life of the hard drive too.

The Welland Greenstar ME-740PS, distributed by Anyware Computer Accessories, is available for purchase now and carries a recommended retail price of AU$59.
