<b>Appearance Extension patch: good news and bad news

Regarding the Appearance Extension patch mentioned last time:

Good news The patch fixes more than just Mathematica problems. It fixed a font problem with the MacComCenter Plus 2.1 fax software for Scott Rose and Josh Rafofsky. Bill Taggart claims it fixed a font display problem with Apple's Extensions Manager (using an 8500/120 and Multiscan 17 monitor at 1024x768 resolution).

Bad news Several readers confirmed that they could not safely apply the patch to Appearance Extension 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 (either the patch would not apply or system crashes would occur after the Extension was patched). The patch only worked reliably with the 1.0 version of the Appearance Extension that came with Mac OS 8.0. (Is it possible that these newer versions already have the fix built-in?; according to reader replies, the answer is "no.")

Good news Eric Belsley (of the MRP) suggests that the patch may work with 1.0.1 after all. The solution: patch a non-active copy of the Appearance Extension and then drag the patched copy to the System Folder to replace the active copy. Eric only had problems (including system crashes) when he applied the patch directly to an active copy. Other readers are now confirming that the patch will work on 1.0.1.
