Backup 3.0 (#3): Incomplete restores; Backup archive 'in use' message

Incomplete restores A number of users are beginning to report issues with restorations of backed up data generated by Backup 3.0.

MacFixIt reader Barry Clarke writes:

"Scheduled backups to iDisk or Hard Discs/External Discs work just fine. Restore from latest Backup provides empty folders and can destroy original data if Backup restores to the default original location.

Another reader adds:

"When backing up the Users folders, only the Administrator's whole folder is backed up. Only partial files and folders of the other users are backed up. Their Documents, Music, Pictures and Movies folders are skipped. What use is this for a backup program?"

Backup archive 'in use' message Meanwhile, another reader reports receiving error messages indicating that the backup file archive is already in use when only one backup is taking place (Backup 3.0 does not allow synchronous backups).

The reader writes:

"In trying to backup to a CD using Backup 3.0, part way through the process I continually get a notice 'The backup archive is in use and can't be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again.' Three alternatives are offered: 1. Force eject. 2. Stop Entire Backup. 3. Try Again. Neither completes the backup but simply yields a repeat of the notice. Comments on Apple's help forums indicate others are having this problem, but nobody seems to have pinpointed a cause or a solution. I've tried the backup process half a dozen times and get the same result each time."
