Audio CD skipping goes beyond iMacs

CNET staff
Regarding yesterday's item on audio CDs skipping and iMacs running OS X: The problem is apparently not limited to iMacs, as was suggested. It extends to at least FireWire PowerBooks - and perhaps beyond. Readers could not confirm that it mattered which tracks were being played.

Frazier Mills notes: "I have the same problem playing CDs with my Pismo (FireWire PowerBook) 400's DVD drive, I can't confirm any difference between tracks on different parts of the disc though."

Greg Walker also confirms the symptom on his Pismo PowerBook 400, noting: "I have the same problem. And it isn't just on the first four tracks - it skips and pops during the whole CD!"

Mark Abrams concurs: "I've been having this problem as well, on a FireWire PowerBook. It appears to be a system-wide issue (happens in QT or Audion as well as iTunes), as well as an OS X one (Audio Player in OS 9 works fine). Haven't noticed any difference playing lower tracks vs. higher tracks."

Keith Calvelli confirmed the problem on his original beige G3. Stefan Schulze confirmed it for his iMac.
