ATI Rage Orion card and crash conflict with Power Mac 6400/6500: a patch is on the way

Regarding our previous report of a conflict between the ATI Rage Orion card and the Power Mac 6400/6500, Jim Woodgett reports that ATI now has a patch in beta testing that will fix this.

Interestingly, the Release Notes that come with the Orion card list other Macs and Mac clones that also have this conflict. However, the Notes imply that the already available ATI 4.0.1 Software Update should fix it (although apparently it doesn't):

The ATI 4.0.1 Software Update is required if you have installed either an ATI Rage Orion or an ATI Nexus 128 and you have an older system similar to and including the systems listed below. If you experience a black screen, a hang or both once the system extensions begin loading and you have your Orion or Nexus 128 installed, then you likely need this update. Affected systems: Apple 4400, 5400, 5500, 6400, 6500. 6360 or 7220; Assistive Technology Freestyle; APS Technologies M*Power 603e series; Mactell XB Series/ Twister/ Typhoon; Marathon Computer RackMac TZ 603e; Motorola StarMax 3000,4000,5000; UMAX C500, C600; Power Computing PowerBase..."
