Myfox, the startup behind the Myfox Smart Home Security System I reviewed in 2015, just announced at CES that it's adding optional professional monitoring to its list of features by the end of March.

Existing Myfox customers can simply opt in to the $10 monthly service through the related Android or iOS app -- without having to worry about a contract like Vivint, AT&T and other professional security firms.

Myfox isn't the only DIY company introducing month-to-month monitoring, though. Earlier this week, Lowe's Iris announced a similar service for double the price. Less than a month ago, SmartThings announced that it would be offering Scout's monthly monitoring service to its users. And, DIY security brands like Simplisafe have offered optional monitoring for years.

So, while the trend of DIY security companies offering optional monitoring isn't exactly new, Myfox is shifting the paradigm a bit with its $10 monthly price -- it's the best we've seen (yet).

We'll have to test it out in the CNET Smart Home to see how it stacks up against pricier monitoring services, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, take a look at what else is happening at CES 2016.
