Pick up the Alcatel OT-222 mobile phone from Asda over the next few days, and you could effectively find yourself £1 richer. Sacred blue, as they say in France.

The supermarket is selling the £9 pay as you go phone with £10 free credit on the Orange network. It will flog the handsets in its supermarchés from tomorrow. You can, however, also buy the phone from Asda's Web site now, and then pick it up in your local outlet later. That way you can guarantee you'll get one of the mobiles, but you won't have to pay a £6 home-delivery fee, which would nullify the deal's appeal.

The OT-222 itself is about as basic as they come, although it does pack an FM radio to keep you entertained as you browse the aisles. There's also something to be said for its claimed 7 hours of talk time, and over two weeks of standby time -- no-one'll be scoffing at your budget mobile when their smart phone has run out of juice in the middle of a conference call about whether to buy Sugar Puffs or Coco Pops.

Asda says it has 35,000 of the Alcatel handsets for sale, and the offer will last as long as stocks do. If this is your kind of bargain, you'd better hurry to the Web site now -- Crave loves a bargain and intends to place 34,999 orders this afternoon.
