As encryption battle heats up on the Hill, FBI says iPhone hack limited to 5C
The FBI director shares some details on the iPhone 5C hack -- and senators may know more than Apple. Meanwhile, an anti-encryption bill could be cooking in Congress, and the Obama administration is said to be against it.
The FBI is debating whether it should tell Apple about the iPhone 5C hack, but it is spilling some secrets to US senators.
FBI director James Comey told an audience at Ohio's Kenyon College that the method used to break into a locked iPhone 5C won't work on newer iPhone models. The agency didn't need to go to court to force Apple to create a backdoor, but an upcoming anti-encryption bill may force the hand of tech companies to comply in the future. CNET Update explains:
