AppleWorks 6: Generic white icons in Web Starting Points Apple TIL article #25142 states: In AppleWorks 6.0.x, the Newsletter and/or Templates icons in AppleWorks 6 Starting Points may appear with a generic white icon. Clicking the icon does not open any content. This symptom is a result of unusable cache files. the solution is to delete the files in the AppleWorks/Starting Points/Cache folder. DiskWarrior warns against running HDT's Benchmarks Tom Anderson writes that, after selecting to run the Benchmark command from Hard Disk ToolKit 4.0, a warning from DiskWarrior's extension popped up, saying that a "potentially serious damage to the catalog tree was about to take place (Error 8007,1,4)." Tom is still not sure whether this means there is a serious problem with HDT or whether the DiskWarrior alert is in error. Update: Alsoft's Joe Muscara replies: "Benchmarking software is a bit unusual because, in order to test the performance of the disk itself, it accesses the disk in ways that differ from normal Mac OS behavior. This could appear to DiskShield/DiskWarrior Extension to be corrupting the directory when in fact it is not. All the user has to do is simply go to the DiskShield tab in DiskWarrior, check 'Turn off protection for these applications:', click the Add button, and choose the benchmarking application." Steven Kapplin adds that "I have recently run the HDT 4.0 disk benchmarks and have not experienced any warnings from DiskWarrior." Web page crashes Netscape If you are using Netscape Communicator 4.7.2 or 4.7.3 (and perhaps earlier versions) and you go to this web page, Netscape will crash with a Type 2 error. The same page loads just fine in Internet Explorer. Not sure if this is related to the cause but, for a basically simple page, its source code surprisingly reveals use of xml and style definitions. (Thanks, Ken Goff.) A suggestion to Apple to help work-around sleep-related crashes Andreas Kadavanich had an interesting suggestion. To solve problems with programs that crash when the Mac goes to sleep or wakes-from-sleep (such as this one with Explorer), how about Apple creating an OS folder (similar to the Shutdown Items folder) where applications placed there automatically quit prior to sleep onset? iCab open window tip The iCab 2 Web browser has a convenient feature not available in other browsers (as far as we know): If you Command-Shift-Click on a link, it opens the link page in a new window behind the current window (Command-Click opens it in front of the current window, as do other browsers). This allows you to easily continue working in the current window while the linked window opens and loads. (Thanks, David Gustavson.)
