AppleWorks and ViaVoice Regarding yesterday's report that ViaVoice does not work with AppleWorks 6.x, John Melby replies: "I am running ViaVoice 1.0.2 with AppleWorks 6.0.3 with no problems. All I needed to do was rename the AppleWorks application from 'AppleWorks 6' to just 'AppleWorks.'" Note: a newer version of "AppleWorks Late-Breaking News" is accessed via AppleWorks Help (click on the "Late-Breaking News" alias in the AppleWorks 6 folder to easily open it); it contains this tip and other updated info. DVD mounting solution John Rizzo writes: "I have discovered a solution to the problem of the Power Mac G4's DVD-RAM drive, where it doesn't always recognize audio CD's (see item in Troubleshooting Mac OS 9.0.x). Near the front of the drive's tray, there are two white tabs on either side. These serve as guides for a disc. When a DVD-RAM cartridge is in the tray, these tabs are down. However, popping at least one of them up before you place a CD fixes the problem - the drive always recognizes the discs. Note that there are two styles of tray in Power Mac G4 DVD-RAM drives. I don't know if this solution - or even the problem - applies to both types." Joliet Volume Access: ups and downs A reader notes that the Joliet Volume Access file (previously mentioned here) addresses the problem of creating multi-session Joliet CDs with Toast. Previously attempts to add a session would cause all filenames from the previous session to revert to DOS 8.3 format (as described on this Adaptec support page). On the down side, Ronald Leroux reports some conflicts attributed to this Joliet file (we have no other confirmation of this as yet): (1) Global Village software v2.6.8 refuses to load; (2) a Type 1 error occurs when inserting a Windows CD (e.g., First Aid 2000). Removing the Joliet Volume Access extension eliminated both symptoms. Other reported problems are indicated on the author's Web page; a 1.2 version should be out soon to address these matters.
