AppleScript 1.8.3: crash on install: a follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding yesterday's reports of crashing when attempting to install AppleScript 1.8.3, we have some follow-up items that provide some insight as to what is going on:

Waiting after the crash The install may be still working towards completion even after the crash.

For example, Neal McAuley writes: "I got the same crash. Fired up Process Viewer and waited until the prebinding process vanished before I restarted and I don't seem to have any problems with my TiBook G4."

Nicholas Clark Ashbaugh similarly replies: "The prebinding portion of the installation continued after the crash, as evidenced by top command in Terminal. Once the prebinding process was complete, I rebooted into single user mode and ran fsck. There were a few disk errors, which fsck fixed. I rebooted OS X without a problem. FWIW, Software Update also lists the upgrade in its log file."

Update: Brent Rossow found that, after the apparent crash occurred, if he simply selected the Install Updates command from Software Update's Update menu, Software Update began the process all over again, this time sucessfully.

How to tell if the update was successful or not Schoun Regan suggests: "Look in System/Library/Components for the file AppleScript.component. It should be 1.8.3. If not, then remove this file and remove the file in /Library/Receipts/ called AppleScriptUpdate1.8.3.pkg. Then restart and run the Software Update again."
