AppleJack 1.4.3 final edition released; Intel-based Mac compatibility

CNET staff

Making its long-awaited official transition to Intel-based Mac compatibility, AppleJack 1.4.3 has been released (we previously noted an under-the-radar 1.4.3rc3 release)

AppleJack is a freeware command-line utility that makes a number of troubleshooting procedures available via single-user mode at startup -- obviating issues that can occur later in the startup process and prevent you from being able to launch other troubleshooting utilities. Perhaps more importantly to the typical user, it makes these procedures easy to perform.

Official release notes are as follows:

  • Compatible with Intel-based Mac OS X systems.
  • Added an automated uninstaller routine, to enable easy and almost foolproof uninstallation of AppleJack.
  • Added /var/root/Library/Caches to the system cache cleanup routine.
  • Experimental expert mode exists, but is currently hidden until it can be tested further. (see Appendix B). The only well-tested options at this point are the memory test using the included Memtest utility, and the option to disable auto login.
  • Improved the internal coding of user-input prompts. Uses a standardized interface for these functions now.
  • The preference file check now uses a null byte character to separate files rather than an arbitrary "improbable" string.

The new release is available as a svelte 331 KB download.
