Problems applying the update Some users are reporting problems applying the 2.0 update. Typical reports:

  • "When I download the software update "take 2" my Apple Tv restart very quickly and return to the 1.1 software. I can't update to the new software."
  • "Everytime I go to update my Apple TV, it downloads the update ( about 30 minutes), then as I  apply the update, it goes to the Apple logo and then back to the menu saying that the update failed.  I've repeated this several times to no avail."
  • "I am unable to apply upgrade my original Apple TV. The upgrade stalls and quits. Unplugging the  Apple TV and even restoring original Apple TV factory settings are to no avail!"

We're still searching for solutions to this issue. If you're having a similar problem, please let us know.

Brightness settings missing One MacFixIt reader reports that his brigthness settings are missing after the update.

"Hi, I have updated to Apple TV 2, and I founded that bright setting is missing from the menu."

No sound through HDMI Some users are reporting that audio no longer works through HDMI after the Apple TV 2.0 update. Switching to component cables fixes the problem.

No rentals One reader writes:

"I have 2 Apple TVs.  1 updated fine.  The other does not show the options for rentals under movies."

TV shows won't play Users continue to report a previously reported issue where TV shows purchased from the iTunes store will not play, supplying the error message "incorrect format," after the update. MacFixIt reader Drew writes:

"I'm experiencing the "incorrect format" message on TV shows that I've played on my apple TV before the update."

Sync issues Users are also reporting issues with iTunes syncing after the update. Earle Alexander writes:

"After upgrading my Apple TV it will no longer sync automatically or manually with my iTunes music or movie library. Before the upgrade syncing worked perfectly. I opened Settings on ATV and got the password that it gave for syncing the libraries on my Computer and that did not help."

Interestingly, repairing permissions using Apple's Disk Utility (located in /Applicatoins/Utilities has fixed this issue for a number of users with previous iterations of the Apple TV software -- evidenced by this Apple Discussions thread.
