Fixes for problems updating We continue to receive reports of problems installing the 2.0 update, including messages indicating that the update failed, or a restart into the 1.x software.

If you are experiencing these problems, you may want to try performing a factory restore on the Apple TV then re-attempting installation of the update. Note that this will erase all media on the drive.

Other users have reported that simply powering the unit off then back on prior to the update allowed a smooth process. MacFixIt reader Bob writes:

"If you're like most of AppleTV users, you leave the device on 24/7.  In my case, I found out that if you unplug the unit for a few seconds and restart (a cold boot) before you do the upgrade, it goes more smoothly."

Unauthorized upgrades might cause problems Meanwhile, we've received reports indicating that unauthorized upgrades, such as the one that replaces the original Apple TV's 80GB hard drive with a 160GB drive may cause problems for the update.

MacFixIt reader Gary Dickey writes:

"I have 2 original Apple TV's. I have tried to download and install the update on both about ten times oover the last few days. After the install it always returns to the original version, which in my iTunes say 1.0 The thing that is different with mine, is I found a tutorial to change the original 80 gig HD to a 160 HD. They both have worked fine. But the 2.0 update does not install."

AirTunes weirdness Users are also reporting difficulty with the newly added AirTunes streaming capabilities.

"We just installed the Take 2 update and we're having a very weird issue when using the Apple TV as an Airtunes speaker. We select the device in iTunes, start playing a song, and the song info on the Apple TV is completely wrong. It says:

  • Untitled
  • Unknown Artist
  • Unknown Album

"The timer stays at 0:00:00 / 1:00:00 while playing and the progress bar doesn't move."
