Amid heightened anticipation for the launch of its iPad tablet device on Saturday, Apple on Thursday made available numerous iPad-ready applications and began listing Web sites that have been optimized and enhanced for compatibility with the iPad's features.

Although Apple's list so far includes only a handful pf prominent sites, others can be submitted for approval. Apple

The sites of the following organizations are listed as iPad-ready thus far: CNN, Reuters, The New York Times, Vimeo, Time, Major League Baseball, The White House, Virgin America, Sports Illustrated, Flickr, People, and TED. You can expect that list to grow quickly, as at the bottom of the page, Apple has included a "Submit your site" link.

From the looks of it, adherence to several things is shared among the sites listed: HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Apple is clearly touting those open Web standards over the technologies of companies such as Adobe Systems, whose Flash technology has not yet been made compatible with Apple's mobile devices.

Various site features at Apple's own MobileMe service have also been updated for the iPad. The "Find my iPad" and "Remote wipe" features for managing lost iPads has been implemented, and there is no doubt that with Apple's iWork productivity suite in the iPad, we will see additional support features make their way to the service.
