Early problems

Frozen cursor upon restart Bob Lopez reports that his cursor was frozen after applying the 2004-09-07 security update. A subsequent restart resolved the issue:

"Although I know better, I rushed to install today's security update (9/7/2004) and restarted to a frozen machine. Upon inspection, it turns out that just the cursor was frozen. Keyboard shortcuts were working, my apps all launched as they should have. I quit each application but it made no difference. Even force quitting the Finder made no difference. All was well after a restart."

Upgrade procedure In order to help avoid problems like the aforementioned from occurring, be sure to follow our recommended procedure for applying significant system updates:

  • Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
  • When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function.
  • Install the update.
  • After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.

FedEx site inoperable MacFixIt reader Mikey notes that the FedEx Web site does not display properly with Safari after applying the latest update:

"Just a note to mention that after applying the Security Update 2004 09-07, Safari does not display the FedEx website properly. It shows non-html listings of what SHOULD be the buttons, tabs, etc., and little "locked" icons separating what I think are the categories (FedEx Ground/FedEx Express, etc.)...

"This did not happen just minutes prior to my doing the update, when I had to make a label for a quick shipment. I have never had trouble with any of the updates before [...] As a test, I tested/updated another one of our eight G4s, and the same thing occurred; fine before the update, garbled afterwards. If you'd like to try to repeat this, the URL I accessed to repeat this glitch is: http://www.fedex.com/

"From there, choose USA from the pull-down country menu, and the resulting page will not display properly."

No issues Stephen Northcott is among the readers experiencing no issues with the new update:

"No problems with the latest security update... Not that I expected any. That's on a 17" PowerBook G4 and a Dual G5 2 GHz (Both running 10.3.5)"
