Apple Pro Application Support 4.0 (#2): More problems after installation

Some users are reporting distorted audio output after applying Pro Application Support 4.0, and we have a potential fix.

Reader reports continue to trickle in about problems possibly resulting from Apple's recently released Pro Application Support 4.0, which updates Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture, Final Cut Express HD, Soundtrack, Logic Pro and Logic Express.

One reader writes that, since performing the installation, "my Power Mac G5 dual 2.0 sounds distorted" (in all applications, not just Apple Pro applications).

Another reader notes: "All the photos in my Aperture library since this update have artefacts of magenta in various areas of the image. Even when I import new images they have the same problem."

Another reader reports that since the update, "Logic Pro 7.2.3 has become extremely unstable" on his machine.

Suggested fixes In an email exchange with the reader who was having sound problems, we suggested that he try using Audio MIDI Setup (in the Utilities folder) to tweak his sound settings, and he reported that Audio MIDI Setup was crashing on startup. The crash log suggests that possibly a bad plug-in was to blame. If you're having sound problems or instabilities after this update, it might be worth cleaning out third-party sound plug-ins from within your /Library/Audio folder, just to see whether things get any better.
