Don't wrap it too tightly!

In the wake of recent reports indicating frayed or burning connection points on MagSafe power adapters (an issue we've reported on since November, 2006), Apple has posted a pair of Knowledge Base article=s with instructions for eliminating strain on the thin wire that runs from the power brick to the computer.

The first article "How to disconnect the MagSafe power adapter," shows several pictures of proper disconnection techniques, which include gripping the square connector then moving it up, down, or do the side to remove it, rather than pulling it straight back or pulling the cord sideways. Apple says "Disconnecting the adapter from the connector in the manner described above will reduce wear on the adapter cable and increase the life of your MagSafe adapter."

The second article "Reducing cable strain on your MagSafe power adapter," says "The most important way to maintain adapter health is to regularly inspect the cables, connectors, and the adapter itself for any kinks, breaks, bends, or other damage. Should you find any such damage, discontinue use of the adapter." It also offers recommendations such as unwrapping the cable while supporting the adapter, rather than letting the weight of the adapter falling unfurl the cable. It also recommends not winding the cable too tight.

As previously reported, Apple takes a tough stance on cable damage with regard to warranty coverage, stating:

"If the DC cable shows visible strain relief damage or if the cable is missing insulation or rubber in some areas, discard the adapter properly and do not use it again. Strain relief damage and missing cable insulation or rubber typically result from excessive force or improper use which are not covered by Apple's one year limited warranty. Replacement power power adapters may be purchased from the online Apple Store or from an Apple Authorized Reseller."
