Apple offers downloadable, bootable TechTool Deluxe CD for AppleCare customers [Download link now working]

On numerous occasions we've discussed a conundrum where purchasers of AppleCare receive utility discs (which can boot the system, perform hardware diagnostics and includes a copy of the currently PowerPC-only TechTool Deluxe application from Micromat) that are not compatible with their new Macs [see previous coverage 1, 2 and 3]

The issue is that these utility discs are usually playing catch-up with new Mac model introductions, lacking the appropriate startup components.

Apple has now sidestepped this issue by offering a downloadable version of the bootable TechTool Deluxe disc. While an Intel-based version of TechTool Deluxe is still not available, this new download will prove a boon to owners of PowerPC-based Macs' whose AppleCare discs will not boot their systems.

UPDATE: Download broken The link for downloading the bootable TechTool Deluxe disc appears to broken as of 9:00 PM PST. Several users report proceeding to the TechTool Download page and clicking the download link, then being redirected to the serial number entry page.

UPDATE #2: The download link has now been fixed.
