Apple Maps rival Google Maps employs 7,100 people

The Apple Maps app in iOS 6 has been an unmitigated disaster -- meanwhile Google Maps employs 7,000 people.

Mapocalypse, Cartogeddon, Navi-gate -- whatever you want to call it, the arrival of the Apple Maps app in iOS 6 and the new iPhone 5 has been an unmitigated disaster. Compare that to Google, which employs no less than 7,000 people on its rival Google Maps.

The Big G has more than 1,100 full-time Google employees and roughly 6,000 contractors working on Google Maps, Business Insider reports, when you factor in the people trawling the highways, byways and skyways collecting data.

Jobs include pootling around the avenues and alleyways of the world in Street View cars and making plans, drawing maps and correcting listings.

By comparison, Apple only has 13,000 employees in total, if you don't count those who work in Apple Stores. Instead of dedicating an army of footsoldiers to perfecting the new Apple Maps app, Apple instead bought data from mapping companies, including sat-nav folks CoPilot.

Apple is reported to be hiring more developers to work on the Maps app. Let's hope they don't use iPhones -- they may not make it to the interview.
