Apple has released Apple Java 1.3.1 update 1 for OS X 10.1.3. Here is what is new:

"Delivers improvements for text, mouse, and printing components in the Java 1.3.1 implementation for Mac OS X, and improves its overall stability and compatibility. The implementation of text components has been completely updated, resolving a number of issues found in the use of TextAreas and TextFields. Mouse behavior is improved, especially for mouse events that involve dragging in complex applications. Many printing issues have been resolved including multi-page printing and clipping issues."

For more details, see the Java for Mac OS X Release Notes.

Initial reader report We have already received a note from a reader who has installed the update. Josh Aas writes:

"I just downloaded Apple's Java 1.3.1 Update 1 a bit ago and I've already seen quite a few improvements. Speed is up around the board, even in starting and quitting Java applications. My favorite part is that this update solved almost all the issues I had with LimeWire - the tabbed windows refresh correctly, mouse clicks do what they should, and everything is in general much more responsive."

Update: Fritz Mills adds: "For those using SonicWall Firewalls, no browser under OS X has been able to sign in to the management console. Now, with Java 1.3.1 release, Netscape 6.2 is able to successfully sign in to the management console. iCab comes close, drawing the sign-in screen correctly, but authentication always fails. IE still can't even draw the sign-in screen. But it's good news that users no longer have to boot into 9 to get in to their SonicWalls."

Tom Christy adds: "Another Java app which the recent OS X Java update has sped up considerably is Britannica 2002."
