Apple has introduced the iPod Photo, which is the first model to sport a high-resolution color screen, allowing users to store and scroll through photo libraries.

An Apple statement reads "iPod Photo lets you combine your music and your favorite photos to create magical slideshows on your iPod, and features TV-out for sharing your slideshows on big screen televisions and projectors."

The iPod Photo comes in 40GB or 60GB models which hold up to 10,000 or 15,000 songs, and claims battery life of 15 hours for music playback or up to 5 hours for slideshows.

The units can synchronize with a photo library in iPhoto and Windows users can synchronize their iPod with their photo collection in Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Album or their My Pictures folder.

The new 40GB and 60GB iPod Photo models will begin shipping today for a suggested retail price of US$499 and US$599 respectively. The iPod Photo comes with a a dock with audio and video out, earbud headphones, 1.4m AV cable, 1.2m 30-pin to FireWire cable, a 1.2m 30-pin to USB cable, AC adapter, black carrying case and a CD with iTunes 4.7 for Mac and Windows computers.

The company also introduced a 20GB iPod U2 Special Edition which is expected to be available mid-November for a suggested retail price of $349. The extra US$50 over the normal 20 GB model buys black casing for the iPod, a red scroll wheel, engraved signatures from U2 band members, and US$50 toward a complete U2 music collection available from the iTunes music store.
