Apple has released Backup 3.1.1, a new release of the backup application that is included with the .Mac subscription package.

According to its release notes, version 3.1.1 makes improvements in the following areas:

  • Backup and restore with external drives
  • Memory management
  • Restore of bundled file types

The new release is available as a 5.5 MB standalone download for .Mac members. To obtain the download, first login to your .Mac account, then select "Backup" in the lower portion of the left-hand sidebar. Next click the "Download Backup 3" link in the lower right area of the resulting page. If you are already logged into your .Mac account, you can simply use this link.

As indicated on our Apple Backup product page, previous iterations of the software have been marred by a number of issues including incomplete restorations, problems deleting old backups and more. It remains to be seen whether or not version 3.1.1 corrects these issues.
