Apple has released an update for the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Base station, bringing the firmware version to 7.1.

Apple's release notes indicate that the firmware update includes general fixes, compatibility updates, and security improvements.

Specifically, with regard to security, this update changes the default setting of the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Base station to limit incoming IPv6 traffic to that coming from local networks and resolves an issue where filenames on a password-protected AirPort Disk may be viewable to users on the local network. For further information, see Apple Knowledge Base article #305366.

This update requires AirPort Utility 5.1, which is installed by AirPort Base Station Update 2007-001, which was released in late March. That update caused some confusion because it did not include a firmware update, only updating the AirPort Utility software (which is used to apply firmware updates).

In order to apply the firmware update, launch AirPort Utility 5.1 (located in /Applications/Utilities and select Check for updates from the AirPort Utility menu, then follow the instructions to download and install firmware on selected Base stations.
