Time Machine not backing up Aperture libraries Mac OS X iterations prior to 10.5.2 exhibit an issue where Running Time Machine backup or restore operations while Aperture is running may lead to inconsistencies in the Aperture database.

Apple Knowledge Base article #306853 says this issue is "resolved in Mac OS X 10.5.2," but that's only half the story. Apple has "resolved" the issue by automatically excluding Aperture libraries from Time Machine backups. As such, you should use an alternative backup method for Aperture libraries.

JPEG images from Aperture 1.5 not opening Several users are reporting that some collections of JPEG images created by Aperture 1.5 cannot be properly opened with Aperture 2.0. Thumbnails appear, but attempting to display any images in full size displays the error message "Unsupported Image Format."

Reference image issues MacFixIt reader Steve Solomon reports some issues with reference images in the new version of Aperture.

"Last year, I started keeping images outside of the Aperture library as referenced images. After I upgraded from version 1.5.3 to 2, about 80 percent of my referenced images, about 1500 of them, lost their connections to Aperture. The images were simply inside a folder in the Pictures folder of my home directory. They hadn't moved. Aperture insisted that they were offline. I had to go to 'manage referenced files' in the file directory and show Aperture where every single image was again. Fortunately, they were simply in subfolders organized by month.

"It took time and some trial and error to figure out how to get them reconnected in batches. I would have been seriously upset if most of my images were referenced files. A user on the Apple Aperture forum reports that he lost connections for his referenced iPhoto library. Unless Apple has changed the somewhat random/arbitrary filing system that my iPhoto library used, it would be a disaster to try to reconnect all of those images. I would seriously consider NOT upgrading to version 2 if you have a lot of referenced files until more is known about this issue."

Unexpected quits Some users are reporting random unexpected quits from Aperture. Larry Seigal writes:

"I have just installed the upgrade on my iMac core duo and on my G-4 laptop. The G-4 has this problem: every time I exit the program I get an error message that states the program has quit unexpectedly - after it has shut down at my request!"

Other users are reporting repeated unexpected quits when using control-clicks in Aperture -- a problem that may be caused by third-party contextual menu plug-ins.
