The Apache Software Foundation on Tuesday released version 1.0 of the Apache Geronimo open-source application server and said that it has added a number of new Java-related projects to the Apache incubation process.

Apache Geronimo is a certified Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.4 application server and forms the basis of IBM's WebSphere Application Server Community Edition. The application server supports the Java Business Integration (JBI) specification and includes a Web management console.

A number of existing Java middleware open-source projects have proposed joining Apache. For example, the ServiceMix enterprise service busproject started the Apache incubation process in an effort to work more closely with the Geronimo project.

Apache's chief marketing officer Susan Wu shares some details on future Apache Geronimo enhancements, including support of EJB 3 and integration with enterprise service bus products.
