CNET staff
Bill Cottrell had a problem where SpaceSaver automatically expanded its files at startup. Aladdin Tech Support replied:
"One thing that might cause this to happen is if you are using a utility that scans the files on your hard drive either at shutdown or restart. Utilities such as FileSaver will do this, as well as Virus protection programs such as Virex or Norton AntiVirus. In order to prevent SpaceSaver files from becoming expanded you need to identify and disable the utility that is scanning your files.

The SpaceSaver Read Me file does describe a number of known conflicts with Virus protection programs, and if you use either Virex or Norton Anti Virus you should not use SpaceSaver.

Where ever it is practical to do so you should use StuffIt Deluxe and not SpaceSaver to compress files. Not only will Deluxe be able to compress you files much smaller than SpaceSaver, it is also less prone to the kind of conflicts you seem to have encountered with SpaceSaver."

[Note: we have previously posted information about the anti-virus conflict mentioned here, but not specifically about FileSaver. SpaceSaver also has other confirmed conflicts, such as one preventing certain applications from saving files.]
